Disadvantages of Working at Home - part 5

We have finally gotten to the last part of this serie.

I have left for the end an issue that is actually and advantage for most of work at home entrepreneurs and a disadvantage only for a few (including myself).

Among the jobs I have done over time, a couple of them were in restaurants (prep cook, waiter, manager, bar back). For those very few of you who have never worked in a restaurant, you should know that such jobs can get really stresfull at times. There’s probably some of you who don’t understand what’s so stressful about a restaurant job. Well, this is not the place to talk about it. You’ll have to trust me.

Anyhow, of course other jobs can get stresful as well (including office ones). However, the kind of stress I’m talking about is the one involved by the fact that you don’t have a second chance at doing things right. For instance, in my particular case, you brought your customer the wrong dish on a busy day, you’re pretty much in trouble. Just a simple example to get my point out.

And, needless to say there’s plenty of other jobs similar in this area: fire-fighter, police officer, nurse, doctor (for example in an emergency room) etc.

Most of the people doing such jobs love the adrenaline they get. It’s a feeling I can’t really describe. You have obstacles and challenges every step of the way. And you have to overcome them in matters of minutes, sometimes seconds. Once you get your experience at your job, you get better and better at overcoming these obstacles, up to the point where you become almost perfect. You start seeing the solutions right away (whether because you’ve been in a similar situation before or because of your experience you “just know” what needs to be done). At end of the day, when you look back at how things worked out just fine, you feel victorious. You have won yet another battle with the rest of the world.

For those of us who enjoy the adrenaline and the victories, working from home can become an environment very hard to adjust to. I have had quite a hard time myself. Even now I miss them every once in a while.

You need to know that if you’re one of us you might have a very hard time as well, I would even go as far as saying that some might not even adjust at all. You will have to live without it.

What you might do in the beginning is take a part time job in your field and try and phase out the need for stress and pressure.

I wish you good luck with it.
